Research Facilities
A state-of-the-art facility
The RUTGERS EcoComplex is a 32,000 square foot multi-institutional, multidisciplinary environmental center that harnesses research and education resources towards the development, and industrial application of innovative environmental/agricultural technologies.
The Building:
The EcoComplex is headquartered in a two-story, 32,000 square foot building. The south wall of the atrium is full-height glass with solar screens. These screens block out summer sun yet allow winter sun to heat the floor slabs for a passive solar-heating system and also provide indirect natural light into the atrium.
The building incorporates the following additional environmentally-friendly elements:
- recycled metal for the interior panels
- radiant heat flooring on the first floor atrium
- a newly-formulated interior paint which eliminates the "off-gassing" of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Laboratories: Six labs. Click here for more information.
Education/Conference: The educational and conference functions of the EcoComplex are served by approximately 4200 square feet of instruction area. The facility includes; 120-seat auditorium with state-of-the-art presentation equipment, two 30-seat classrooms, a media room and large conference room. There is a 4800 square foot, three-story passive solar atrium that serves as a display and banquet area for functions held at the facility and a 225 square foot food staging area. For more information please visit our conference center page.
Technology Demonstration: A 1900 square foot, two-story scale-up lab is designed to allow adequate space for pilot scale demonstration units of new environmental technologies. Click here for more information.
Office Space: Two office suites totaling 6000 square feet provide administrative support for the EcoComplex and the Burlington County Office of Solid Waste Management.
Research and Demonstration Greenhouse:
A state-of-the-art research and demonstration greenhouse is part of the EcoComplex facility. The greenhouse consists of a 3000 square foot nursery, a 46,000 square foot production house and a 10,000 square foot pole barn (headhouse). The energy needs of the facility are provided though the utilization of landfill gas from the adjacent landfill. Research on year-round vegetable production and recirculating aquaculture are ongoing in this facility. Click here for more information.
