Ocean of Know is an aquaponics production model that is used to teach math and science to underprivileged children in inner-city schools. This project is being done in cooperation with the Columbia University Teaching School. Its objective is to help students grasp the basic skills of math and science by giving them applied problems to solve. Students connect to the EcoComplex over the internet and communicate with a technician in the greenhouse by video and voice. An on-site robot, controlled by the students over the internet, also performs some basic tasks for the system. Early results have shown that the students can learn in six weeks with this system what will normally take six month to learn from a textbook.
