Gef Flimlin is a Marine Extension Agent with Rutgers Cooperative Extension. He has been working with commercial fisheries and aquaculture for almost 30from his office at the Ocean County Extension Center in Toms River, NJ.

He is presently the faculty member in charge of aquaculture research for the EcoComplex Greenhouse and is initiating several new collaborations to improve the science that goes on there.

The first is a cooperative program with the Ocean of Know an educational program for kids that helps them learn math and science by using innovative approaches to aquaculture education.  They will be very involved with telerobotics where students in classrooms in New York City and measure environmental parameters of the fish tanks and perform basic tasks through the use of simple robots accessed through their computers.

Next is a small research project comparing the growth rates of several ornamental aquatic plants in varying media given different fertilizer regimes. This being done in conjunction with the University of Hawaii.

The third endeavor is a collaboration with Quality Koi Company of NJ, a grower of high quality koi, the kind that is prized by people that have beautiful backyard fish ponds.  The company will be growing their fish in a recirculating system and will be working with Cooperative Extension in several small scale research projects to evaluate feeding regimes, filtering capabilities and linking their fish culture with the hydroponic growing of edible and ornamental aquatic plants.

There is also a memorandum of understanding with Auburn University in Alabama, the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil and the New Jersey Agriculture Experiment Station to collaborate on various finfish aquaculture research among our institutions.
